Featuring Brian Whyte
What is your name? Brian Whyte
How old are you? 40 (as of 2 weeks now )
Where are you from? I'm originally from Atlanta, but I grew up in Holland & Belgium.
What is your background? I consider myself an eclectic individual with a passion for many things in life. I'm currently into the acting scene, and I mix drinks to pay for bills & acting classes...
What are you currently doing for hair health and care? I currently have twists, that basically resemble small dreads, that I have created & maintained myself since inception. So my care of them involves everything from enhancing the twists at the root level, oiling, washing, detangling, scalp-massage, you name it. It's a job & a half!
Are you using any natural hair products (if yes, what are they and what do you like or not like about them)? I use all natural hair products, though some are a little more natural than others..🤣
I recently started using Creme of Nature, Pure Honey Twisting Cream to give my locks a little grip, if you will. But throughout I've always used both Tea Tree & Olive Oils in my hair & on my scalp. I like the Olive Oil for richness & shine & the Tea Tree oil is good for scalp hygiene & also prevents breakage..
What do you like about your hair and what has taken some time for you to accept about your hair? I've only had long hair 1 or 2 times in my life & this is the first time with dreads, so I'm enjoying the style & this stage of my hair for sure..I also enjoy the compliments I get when people find out I do it myself!--It keeps me from cutting it off.
Honestly, the part I don't enjoy is the fact that it is so much work! My twists don't have any wax or typical products used in dreadlocks, so they're somewhat looser & have to constantly be reinforced. Also every time I wash them they pretty much get tangled together, so the detangling/retwisting/oiling process is pretty much every time I wash my hair.
What are some helpful tips you can share with other readers? I'd say embrace different hairstyles till you find the one that's best for you. But even then, be open to some other creative styles you might try in the future. Sometimes even just wearing the hair you have in a slightly different way can also be a new hairstyle altogether. Having a little variety element will help you enjoy your hair more & have you happier with yourself as a result.
Also, for anyone looking to wear dreads (depending on your hair type), doing them yourself is simpler than you think. That doesn't necessarily mean it's an easy process, as it takes a lot of time, but you can definitely save a good chunk of money by doing a little "self-twisting".
Share something different, interesting, or funny about yourself: I'm an avid lover of fitness & love all things active such as sports, hiking, dancing, rock-climbing, etc. My favorite form of fitness is weight training & resistance training at the gym. I like get in at least 3 or 4 sessions per week. I like to use a variety of methods while at the gym & rotate between free weights, machines & using my own body for resistance (pull-ups/dips/push-ups). Variety is my key to staying in the gym & enjoying the workouts.
