What is your name? Sruti Lam

Where are you from?  I’m Indian by birth, raised in Kuwait and currently residing in San Diego, California.

What is your background?

Medical doctor from India and now a Naturopathic physician who also practices functional medicine.

In a few sentences, tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do:

I love life and strongly believe in my purpose! A total extrovert with love for family, friends and relationships. Growing up in three different cultures has molded me to embrace and love cultures and ethnicities. I enjoy my career and it brings me immense joy to partner with my patients and empower them to navigate through their health challenges. I love food and cooking is both therapeutic and fun for me! And I love the outdoors- hikes, bikes, waterfalls, mountains- I wish to travel the world soon!

What are you currently doing for hair health and care?

My hair is naturally frizzy, dry and thin but has a lot of volume. I spend a considerable amount of time caring for it. From childhood, I’ve dutifully used what most Indians use on their hair: Vatika hair oil (coconut oil, neem, Brahmi, Amla, Henna, rosemary oil, lemon) or simply Parachute coconut hair oil as my pre-shampoo routine. Occasionally, I use a simple egg-white mask or 2-3 spoons of mayonnaise to wrap my hair on really dry days or mostly for an event. I frequently change hair products and I’m currently using Renpure coconut hair shampoo and conditioner. I love Acure products and use the lemon grass clarifying shampoo once a month. I always air dry my hair! My hair routine is wash hair 2-3 times a week and use pre-shampoo conditioner once a week.  I love experimenting with color and highlights and add the zing to my hair once in a while. However, I avoid harsh chemicals and bleaches and have opted for natural products. I use either a hair straightener or a curling wand once a week to style my tresses, either long or short!

What do you like about your hair and what has taken some time for you to accept about your hair?

I love that my hair is versatile and I can change the style or color on occasion. Growing up I always had it in a ponytail or a high bun to avoid spending time on it. But now, I’ve embraced my tresses as love and care have made them silkier, healthier and much more manageable. I eat a rainbow colored diet, mostly plant-based and have increased my healthy fats – nuts, seeds and wild caught fish that have brought radiance to my hair and skin! I do yoga, spend considerable time in nature- hiking, biking or gardening. Pure sleep- my favorite health routine helps with reviving and rejuvenating all aspects of my health.

What are some helpful tips you can share with other readers?

Healthful tips: Always care for the ends: trim and oil the ends to prevent split ends. I get my hair trimmed and layered every 3 months to enhance the bounce and healthy locks. Use lukewarm to cold showers while washing your hair. Satin or soft pillow covers in a cool room to enhance sleep and keep those tresses soft.
