Featuring Dr. Carrie Wine
What is your name? Carrie Wine
How old are you? 37
Where are you from? Pacific NW
What is your background?
A happy blend of art and science! I started undergrad in pursuit of an art degree but my passion for health and fitness led me to a Bachelor’s in Science in Exercise Science along with a Spanish language minor. I followed my passion for health and graduated with a Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine at Bastyr University in 2017. I also continued to follow my artistic dreams and have painted several murals and taught art classes for Paint Nite of Seattle.
In a few sentences, tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do:
I am a mother to the most amazing 4 year old in the world (I may be a little biased). I am a wife to an incredible, supportive person who I love very deeply. I am a naturopathic primary care physician in Bellingham and Mount Vernon. I absolutely love helping others in their path towards optimal health. I feel deeply rewarded as I work with patients to achieve their goals and uncover the root cause of their illness. Outside of work, I am a lover of nature and all that it has to offer and enjoy spending time on our beautiful NW trails and in the garden. I love to break a sweat through various forms of exercise - it is my natural anxiety relief. I clearly love art and enjoy spending down time painting and drawing.
What are you currently doing for hair health and care?
I think my form of hair care is more about what I don’t do to destroy it. I try not to over wash my hair so that I don’t strip it of natural oils. I typically allow my hair to air dry - I joke that I use my hair dryer more for art projects than I do for my hair. I only use styling products for major events such as weddings or formal functions. I don’t dye my hair on a regular basis (though I have done it from time to time for fun). I try to keep my diet chalked full of vegetables and healthy fats to promote good hair growth. I like to live by a 90/10 rule - 90% truly healthy and 10% purely treat.
Are you using any natural hair products (if yes, what are they and what do you like or not like about them)?
I typically stick to natural shampoos and conditioners. My husband has a sensitive scalp and we try to find products with minimal potential irritants. Occasionally I will use an argon oil or another form of hair mask - they tend to add a silky shine to my hair and I should probably consider using them more often.
What works well for you and what doesn’t?
Good: hair straightener for creating curls (thank you for the suggestion Alexa Neynaber) and bobby pins. I also use a small amount of mouse at my roots if I am trying to add a little volume. Bad: Using too much product in my hair is almost always disastrous so I tend to go by the “a little goes a long way” rule.
What do you like about your hair and what has taken some time for you to accept about your hair?
My answer is the same for both questions: My hair is thin and straight which is a blessing and a curse. I had always been envious of those with thick, curly hair. It has taken me years to figure out how to get curls or volume in my hair that will stay put for more than an hour. After talking to enough people with curly or thick hair I realized it was a lot more work than stick-straight hair so I started seeing it as a blessing. I am a pretty low maintenance gal so I love that I can shower and comb my hair and it is pretty much fine to leave the house.
What are some helpful tips you can share with other readers?
Love the hair you have and find out what works for you. Don’t worry about achieving someone else's hairstyle.
