What is your name?

Alexis McKeown, DPM, ND

Where are you from?

Atlanta, GA

What is your background? In a few sentences, tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do.

I am Alexis McKeown; an eternal optimist who loves life, enjoys assisting and motivating others to live their best lives physically, mentally and emotionally.  A few ways that I accomplish this is by being both a  Podiatric and Naturopathic physician. This means that I was trained in both Eastern and Western Medicine. Therefore, my approach to health and healing is more integrative in nature.  I treat a variety of conditions from head to toe uncovering the root cause. My specialties include, but are not limited to pain management, regenerative medicine, sports medicine, health, and wellness coaching, individualized weight management programs, counseling, and geriatrics. In addition, I am passionate about warts.  I am one of two Podiatrists in the United States certified in Marigold Therapy for warts, which is an alternative, painless and effective treatment for warts.  I am enthusiastic about health and ensuring that my patients are well.  I instill in them that self-care is a priority.  I enjoy what I do.

What are you currently doing for hair health and care?

I currently wear protective styles, which are hairstyles that reduce heat and tension to my hair.  This can mean braids, twists, wigs, and weaves.  I like the variety.  Protective styles are great for most hair types.

Are you using any natural hair products?

Yes, I use natural hair care products.  The products that I use are from the Alexyss K Tylor elite collection.  They have done wonders for my hair; my hair is thicker, stronger and longer than before.  In addition to the external products that I use on my hair; I am consuming the appropriate vitamins and minerals through a nutrient-rich diet.

What works well for you and what doesn’t? In addition to diet, one of the biggest things that work best for my hair is stress management.  Stress can cause detrimental effects to your hair.  Therefore, self-care practices are highly important for me and I do them routinely.   Moreover, I also refrain from shampoos and conditioners that contain sulfates as they can cause excessive drying to the hair.

What do you like about your hair and what has taken some time for you to accept about your hair?

My natural curl pattern is one of the things that I love about my hair and what has taken time for me to accept.  Growing up, I begged my mother for a relaxer.  I wanted to look like all the other girls in my class.  Did I need it? No.  I just wanted it; I thought that having straight hair was beautiful.  It was the standard of beauty that was portrayed in the media and I thought at the time that alone was beautiful. Now, of course, I know that is not the case.  Beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, colors, and textures.  #EmbraceYourAuthenticity

What are some helpful tips you can share with other readers? Listen to your body; as it will tell you what it likes and what it doesn't.  So just listen and don’t ignore the signs as they can alert you to an underlying or undiagnosed condition.

Please share something different, interesting, or funny about yourself. I did not realize that I was a nature lover until I moved to Seattle.  I am actually one with nature, however, I prefer glamping over camping. Lol.
